Her World

For Kathleen

Kathleen Bolton was a
dedicated animal advocate,
loyal friend, and nurse
whose generous life left us
this month of April.

It had been a bright afternoon
in Stern Grove park,
Kathleen was helping
her dog into the back of the car
when the sky fell.

Today, I scan the ring of
towering redwoods --
crane to see their green
and brown necks.
How still they are now -
how they bow, as if in memory.

I'd waved to her many days
getting out of her car
cheerfully, energetically,
talking to other dog-walkers
about the goings on in the park--
about the dogs and their funny ways--
about the Spring wind.

A brilliant orange-red stump
cradles a photograph
of her smiling next to two white dogs.
Calalillies, Irises, daisies,
dog photos, friends handwritten words,
colorful love beads
and finally a handmade sock dog
sit on the stump
as the sun filters through the lattice
of branches above.

I Am Not There
by Mary Elizabeth Frye (1904 - 2004)

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night..
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what we want most for what we want at the moment.
